Pregs Govender is a deputy from the South African Human Rights Commission deeply implicated in Human Rights issues in South Africa. She strongly highlighted the urgency of the situation in South Africa concerning poverty by affirming that « Sixteen million people, mostly woman, in rural areas have no access to sanitation ». Indeed, it is well know that poverty is an ongoing problem in the world and will be for many years regarding the lack of progress in that particular field.
But before getting into the topic, it would surely be better to define what is poverty and global justice. The « Oxford dictionary » defines poverty as « the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount ». That is undeniably a large definition of poverty, it is therefore necessary to specify how this definition could fit with our subject. « Being inferior in quality » implicates the fact that the person in state of poverty is well below the standard of living established by the countries. « Insufficient in amount » means that this person is in lack of vital resources as water, food, but also main goods to assure the respect of his human dignity as a decent accommodation, electricity…
[...] The main danger about Poverty is to consider that the global injustice is something normal it might has been trivialised in people's mind for many years. The Human Rights philosophy is directly linked to the concept of Global Justice which arises from the statement that the actual world is unfair, inequal, injuste. Even if some people remains pessimists about the possible eradication of Poverty, considering the lack of progress these past few decades and the absence of political motivation from the States, there are many Human Rights defenders as Thomas Pogge who still act and argue in the direction of proposing a different global order, more fair, just, in the respect of the Human Dignity by all countries. Urbano) In the other hand, many defenders of Human Rights blame the Western countries for their responsibility in the actual global order which is nowadays largely in their favor. Indeed, the Western countries by their actions during the colonization process have enhanced their development over the progress of third-world countries. Furthermore, the exploitation of natural resources by the Western countries in poor States without any ways of exploiting their own resources, remains an important issue in the independance of these countries from Western influence. [...] Every citizen can claim their rights and denounce the violation of them. A person in state of poverty is subject to many human rights violation, I will show in the next part of my essay which human rights are concerned and how do they interact with poverty. II) Poverty : Mother of all Human Rights violations : The violence we see all around us, against people who are as human as we are, who sit in privileged positions, must surely be addressed in a decisive and sustained manner. [...] The advantage of non-governmental organizations is that there are not supposed to be subject to political influences. Moreover, the fundings of these organizations is mostly composed of companies donations, powerful individuals, so there is still a form of lobbying in humanitarian aids which prevents a global order change, the positive duty of States or entreprises is almost never regardless of political interest. Conclusion : Poverty is growing day by day in any States, even in one of the richest country in the world, the United States, there are of the population in state of poverty according to the U.S Census Bureau. [...] I will talk in my essay about poverty as an international issue and not analyse the situation of specific areas, in order to relate poverty with the idea of global justice. In a globalized world, it is barely impossible for a state to live outside the international community, distance between states is not a problem anymore, thanks to internet and the advances in transportation. Culture and knownledge are now sharable in the whole world, that process has contributed to make people from wealthy countries realize what is going on in poor country, nowadays nobody can ignore the reality of poverty.
